Kayuputih is a small village that we are privileged enough to reside in. It is one of only 17 villages within the Kecamatan Banjar. The population is approximately 3500 with the majority of the families living way below the poverty line.
Since our short time associated with the village we have identified several key areas that we feel we can make a true difference and we ask you to support us where possible with our current and future initiatives.
What Sanak will do to make a difference
It is our priority when sourcing food and other items for our retreat to work as closely as possible with local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint and always support local.
Providing jobs to our local community:
We are working closely with the village chief to ensure candidates from our local village are given priority to apply for positions within Sanak. Our current staff from the local village sits at 40% and from the local banjar we sit at 80%. It is our priority to choose local, whilst ensuring service and safety for our guests is not compromised.
We are working with the local primary school which is nearby Sanak to educate the students on the importance of maintaining their natural environment through organizing clean up days, providing them with rubbish bins and organizing talks at the school about the environment.
We are working with the school and the head of the village to develop a program based on set criteria to sponsor up to 5 pupils per year by covering all costs associated with attending school. From school shoes, books, bags, uniforms and other.
We are also donating other items desperately needed in the classroom such as whiteboards, educational posters, books, pens and pencils.
Children’s dance group ‘tari rejang’:
Sanak will sponsor the ornate costumes for the local dance group. The ‘tari rejang’ group is devoted to performing at the many ceremonies held throughout the year within the village is an integral part of the Balinese life. We are passionate about playing a role in retaining and supporting the cultural heritage.
Local hotel school & trainee development:
Work with local hotel schools to develop in-house, on the job training and development programs for aspiring hoteliers to have sponsored internships through Sanak.
We aim to work with the head of the village and the community to improve waste management solutions within the local community.
We are aiming for a ‘plastic free’ property. We educate our staff on how to reduce, reuse and recycle where possible.
We use only glass bottles on our property.
We say no to single use plastic bags and encourage our team to either use any plastic bags we may already have or we provide them and our guests with green bags.
How you can make a difference through Sanak
We ask our guests to feel free to donate any good quality new or second hand clothes, books, pens, pencils, toys and electrical equipment such as old laptops, cameras etc to the property which we than distribute to the local community through our local guardian pak gusti.
We will provide you with a ‘green bag’ when you come to our property, of which you can take on walks or other activities. If you feel the urge to keep the environment clean and want to pick up rubbish throughout your journey, than please fill your bag and bring it back to our team to dispose of in a more responsible manner.
Time & expertise:
If you have a certain area of expertise in sustainable initiatives and would like to donate your time and efforts to work with Sanak on any of the above mentioned programs than we would love to hear from you. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
